Large museums
Among other attractions, Amsterdam is well known for its rich variety of special museums: For your convenience, we have listed a number of museums. Firstly, the three major museums which are located in the Museum Quarter:
Het Rijksmuseum (National Gallery)
The Rijksmuseum is the Netherlands' largest museum. Although the museum is set to undergo thorough renovation work during the coming years, a part is to remain open to visitors with a special exhibition of The Masterworks, in which the Rijksmuseum will show the cream of its own collection of master pieces. The startling presentation in the newly established Philips' Wing provides a special opportunity to see all the highlights of the Golden Age displayed together: the magnificent doll houses, a treasure of silver ware, the most beautiful Delft pottery, grand depictions of Amsterdam's historic peace keeping guards, icons of Dutch history and, of course, all the favourites, such as the famous paintings by Jan Steen, Frans Hals, Rembrandt and Vermeer. Together they tell an impressive tale of the political, economic and artistic wonder of the Golden Age.
